Photo Libraries/Folders

I'm searching thru the Forums, YouTube Channels and the web, and I am not finding good info on how Plex handles photos. I mostly see negative comments around how bad Plex does handle photo libraries/folders that have already been created. I do not want to import my thousands of photos that are already in folders to then see them as one big pile. Can someone provide videos, more documentation around how Plex does this? I will be using a Drobo NAS with most of my Apple devices.

I updated to 1.1.4.2757-24ffd60 last night and now I'm unable to find my Drobo under servers. Could it be an issues with my IP address thats now on my Drobo? According to the Drobo site, 169.254.213.234 is the auto assigned by the Drobo server itself. I'm not sure if that's the issue.

Hello.

I have a DROBO 5N running Plex, all good, love it.. I have many devices that connect to the server over the LAN. iPhone 5C, iPhone 6, iPhone 5S, iPad Gen2, Amazon fire TV, ASUS Android Tablet. I just can't get the iPhone 6 to connect.. and whats even weirder is I can't even connect to the web interface, i have deleted the app, reset network settings, changed the IP of the iPhone, restarted the iPhone, restarted the DROBO, restarted any switches.. logged out, logged in.. let me begin.. deleted the device on PLEX... I have run out of ideas.. Can anyone help? Any suggestions?

Thanks

A very puzzling Drobo and Plex interaction. Can someone advise!

I have about 8Tb of A/V on an ethernet only NAS Drobo 5N. Plex Media Server used this beautifully, and STILL DOES. I had a muck up on my Drobo with its "Shares" and if I go into the NAS, using Unix and with invisible files turned on, the actual Media files cannot be seen. They are there, though, probably in a deleted share which I thought I had faithfully copied to another share. Plex plays them. the Plex Media surver on my Mac Sierra says though that it is unable to download any media file because they can't be found. The old Share path name, which is embedded in Plex, no longer exists visibly on the Drobo, but the files are all "somewhere". This means to me that there is an orphan root file tree on the NAS which incredibly Plex is able to access and present to me as a movie, but unable to LOCATE (Unavailable) if I want to download it. I thought of two possible solutions. You hopefully may have a Plex guts based way to get at the files!
(1) Physically Remove each disk from the NAS one at a time, and scour them with Data Rescue 4, and recover any A/V files it finds (hopefully it can). There are dangers in doing this I suspect apart from the fact that it will take a month!
(2) Somehow re-surrect that orphaned invisible file structure which is hidden and which Plex clearly has access to, but I can't see. I don't think fsck will help because technically I deleted a share, and the structure is fine.

By the way, for some reason when I mount the Drobo in the finder, it mounts fine, but ALSO mounts again with it's IP address. I suspect that this is because I need to use afp for the shares which use TimeMachine and can use smb for others.
All advice welcome!

Update software on Drobo NAS

Hi, usually I get a prompt to update my Plex software running on Drobo NAS but since about 3 months I have not be able to upgrade the Plex software on my Drobo 5N.
Anyone that can please help me to get my Plex updated would be appreciated.
I did actually go through the long process of deleting Plex from my Drobo and reinstalling (thinking it would pick up the new version but nope, it didn't)

Thanks

Lots o' buffering in 1.2.7.2987

Evenin' all. I've been getting a fair amount of feedback about the videos buffering and making it hard to even watch.
I'm running 1.2.7.2987 on Drobo (obv). I know that my machine won't handle transcoding so all of my videos are mp4's and web enabled so it doesn't need to transcode. Never has this been an issue until this recent patch.

I'm pushing plenty of speed up and usually only have 1 person remotely and myself locally on at the same time (or less). I've checked every setting that I can think of and it's either set to "Unlimited" or similar. Nothing that I can figure is restricting my outfeed.

Is there any issues with remote playback in the current build or should I investigate something else? Confused.

After update, plex server can't be found

All was working well.
Unrelated: (I knew there was a Plex update, because everytime there is an update, performance degrades, forcing me to check things out... can this be turned off, it has happened every plex update since it launched on the Drobo 5n).

Back on topic, I updated to the latest update yesterday (12/15/2016) and now, when I click "configure" from the drobo I get the plex web wrapper with the message "a server could not be found". I have 3 clients and 2 of them can still access the content using only DLNA. 1 of them cannot. I followed every step on this page with no success:

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/204604227

Is this is a known issue, or is there a way to revert back to the working server on the Drobo 5n?

Thanks for any help you can provide. (forum toolbar appears unusable on this browser, I have a screenshot I can post later if that will help).

Is there a maximum amount of movies I should put in one folder?

I just bought a drobo and created a Plex server to watch my dvd's in my house.

Is there a max amount (either space or number) of movies I can put in one folder or should make multiple movie folders?
If that is the case can you please let me know the recommended max?

Thanks in advance.

Slow unusable Plex experience after moving to Drobo

I either have something majorly wrong with my library, or Drobo can't handle my library size.

I excitedly bought the Drobo 5N to move my Plex library over. Now browsing the web interface, doing library refresh etc, usually leads to a server unavailable message. Tons of items refuse to accept metadata and artwork. I tried doing an optimize database last night, which doesn't seem to have helped that much.

Any ideas of what I can do to help here?

Browsing through the library is useless now. Most of the posters metadata or even titles don't show up or is taking too lng. During a movie I would see it pause randomly and resume.

Music won't appear in Plex

Running Plex server on Drobo 5N. I copied music into the music folder. Only some of the music appears on the Plex server. I have tried copying music I know was ripped from CD and music purchased from iTunes. There isn't a consistency in which music appears and which doesn't. Does anyone know why music files won't appear in the Plex server?

PLEX Media Server on PC or NAS?

$

Our two-year old Seagate Central (4TB) NAS drive is no longer visible to our home network. I followed Seagate’s recommended reset/recovery procedures but without success. I’m waiting to hear back from Seagate’s technical support group, although I’m assuming worst case and will not be able to recover any files.

I have a digital backup of HOME VIDEOS, PICTURES and MUSIC, but not MOVIES and DVD SHOWS. For those I have the original DVD’s which I will rip again over the next several decades. Given the amount of storage space required for MOVIES, I had not yet planned for a backup copy. Our media includes the following types and approximate number of files:
• MOVIES (250 DVD and Blu-ray)
• TV SHOWS (50 DVD)
• HOME VIDEO (75)
• PICTURES (15,000)
• MUSIC (500)

We will be accessing PLEX on three PC‘s, three iPads, three iPhones, and three HD TV’s (1080i, 1080p, and 2160p). The 1080p and 2160p each have a 5.1 home theater setup. We recently replaced three Time Warner Cable set-top boxes with Roku-4’s. Our Internet provider and basic TV service is Time Warner Cable. We plan to upgrade to Time Warner’s “TV Select and Spectrum Internet” which allows up to 60 Mbps download/5 Mbps upload. Our Roku Apps include NetFlix, Amazon, TWC-TV, others. Our Modem, switch, router, and PC’s are all rated Gigabit. All Ethernet cables are Cat-6. PLEX apps will include Xbox One, Roku, and iOS. For now, only local access, no remote.

The primary desktop PC managing the network is an:
• HP Envy Phoenix 860-180st
• 4.0 GHz Intel Quad Core i7-6700 processor
• 16 GB DDR4-2133 DIMM (2x8GB) RAM
• 64-bit Operating System
• Windows 10 Pro
• Liquid Cooling System
• 512 GB SATA 2.5 3D SSD
• Runs 24/7, but both monitors shut off after 20 minutes of no activity

I’m looking to keep a ‘mirror’ copy of all media on the NAS in the event a similar problem occurs again. This backup (about 4TB) does not need to be on the NAS. In the event of a device failure, the backup could be on a separate disk system. We also prefer to not implement anything too complex.
QUESTIONS:
1) Where is the best place for the PLEX Media Server (running 24/7)? NAS or the HP desktop (specs above)?
2) If PLEX Media Server on NAS, what models would you recommend?
3) Which NAS system(s) would you recommend for just storing media?
4) What backup configuration would you recommend? e.g. SnapRAID
5) Since I may have to rip all MOVIES and TV SHOWS again, which format is more efficient for PLEX? mkv, mp4, etc.

Thanks in advance….

Drobo 5C Review

$

I bought a Drobo 5C purely for my media (although I'm using it for Time Machine too now), and I thought I'd write a review explaining why I went the route I did and my first impressions with this storage system so that it's easier for others to make informed decisions when looking to buy (expensive) hardware. As well: Benchmarks.

After having a completely full 1TB external drive fail on me and losing all my data on the drive (I didn't lose anything I couldn't get back), I decided that it was time to upgrade from the simple USB connected external HDDs to something capable of holding a lot more. My household only has one computer (mac mini) with a few devices (ipad, android phones, PS4) so a NAS was overkill (plus I needed transcoding and every indication was I needed to spend big or build to get the power I needed).

I was looking for something that would protect me from drive failures (the only way I've ever lost data!) but truthfully, though I'm computer literate enough to figure out how to setup a (hardware or software) RAID, I didn't feel it was worth the headache, esp when trying to expand in the future (like with tradition RAID 5 or 6) or needing to invest enough to buy the # of HDD needed (Raid 6 or 10). RAID hybrids and other options felt like I needed to invest more time than I wanted learning how to implement them. I'd rather spend that time with family. So when it came down to priorities, I decided to spend money and save time rather than save money and spend time.

So with that in mind, I looked into Drobo. I could buy as few or as many (up to 5) drives as I wanted, they could be however big/small/fast/slow I needed, all mixed up - it didn't matter. +1 for convenience; +1 for expandability

Since I was going the DAS route the choice was between the 5C and 5D. I considered the 5D briefly because it was advertised as ideal for "home media use", but it was considerably more expensive and the extra features it had I couldn't see myself using. Plus nothing about the hardware gave me the impression that it would be noticeably superior to the 5C for my application. So, I jump in to the 5C.

I purchased 3 3TB HDDs with the unit, there is space for 5 drives, the other 2 can be added at any time. The Drobo is connected via USB 3 to my (late 2014) Mac Mini. 9TB -> 5.44 TB (after redundancy) -> 3.44 TB for media/2TB for Time Machine.

Drobo is as easy to setup and use as the company claims. The whole thing (from packaging to their design and ease of use) feels like they got their inspiration from Apple - it just works. The unit automatically kicks into single disc redundancy w/no other options (eg. JBOD) other than dual redundancy at the click of the mouse (if I have the free space available). It also asks if I want a partition for a time machine backup. i was super clear and easy to use.

Considering the 5D is advertised as ideal for home media use and this one isn't, I thought I'd put it through a "worst case scenario" real world test by playing 4 x 1080p videos (through Plex to ALL my devices, each video different) at the same time (considering my children are not allowed any screen time, this won't happen in the near future) while Drobo was still doing the initial Time Machine backup. The result: One stream sputtered once (I think it was my mac mini TBH) but other than that they all played flawlessly for the 15 minutes they were on. So, I have no concerns about its speed as a NAS for my PMS (you can judge the benchmarks for yourself below, I don't know enough to have an opinion).

All my complaints are fairly petty: The drive requires Drobo software (Dashboard) to set it up, to access certain features of the device and to know how much space is really on/left in the drive (since the computer thinks its a 64TB drive - so that it's expandable). The Dashboard is sometimes slow to recognise the device (read: NOT the computer). I haven't tried the device with the dashboard uninstalled but I've read that it works perfectly fine without it AFTER the setup is finished.

There aren't some of the options one might expect from a RAID unit such as JBOD, RAID0, & RAID1(although, technically if there are only 2 drives in it it'll be something like RAID1), plus it comes at a fairly steep price tag (and the 5D is even pricier). I haven't had the drive long enough to see how easy it is to expand storage, or replace a failed drive, but so far it has functioned as advertised, and if it continues to do so those tasks should be simple procedures too.

Now: The Benchmarks:

Results 52.75
System Info
Xbench Version 1.3
System Version 10.11.5 (15F34)
Physical RAM 8192 MB
Model Macmini7,1
Drive Type Drobo 5C
Disk Test 52.75
Sequential 35.21
Uncached Write 486.09 298.45 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 349.41 197.70 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 9.72 2.84 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 172.56 86.73 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Random 105.13
Uncached Write 79.91 8.46 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 558.75 178.88 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 92.74 0.66 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 77.14 14.31 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase. It was fast and easy to setup, works like a typical external HDD after setup, and provides me with all the storage I need now with the option of easy expansion in the future.

New NAS with PLEX Server - Sonos App unable to connect to Plex Server message

I have a Qnap TS-251+ NAS running the Plex Media Server. The system works with Plex players but will not work with Sonos app. The music file are "seen" but I get an "unable to connect to server" when attempting to play a song.

I spent two hours today on the phone with Sonos tech support. We tried all the usual things such as setting port forwarding to 32400, setting a virtual server, etc. Still would not work.

I have a D-link router 880L with the Sonos Boost connected directly. I have a 24 port switch downstream of the router. All systems seem to be okay except the Sonos app not connecting to play an item even though the song is seen.

Tech support suggested a different router. So, here I am requesting input regarding what router(s) have most easily worked with the Sonos/Plex app. I am not interested in spending a great deal of time trying workarounds if a new router can solve the problem. I would rather have the system up easily so I can listen rather than scratch my head. :)

Thanks.
