Buying a Drobo is possibly the dumbest thing I've done in recent memory. But I have the stupid thing now and have spent time hacking it to work more or less the way I want it to (the whole concept of Drobo 'Apps' as marketed on their website is a complete lie. Nothing works out of the box).
Anyway, ranting aside, the other problem I have with the Drobo is bad performance when streaming on my network due to slow conversion on the Drobo.
My question (and apologies if this has been posted before, my searches revealed nothing) is: what is considered a native format that wouldn't require conversion? x264 or something else? And which container would be best for a smooth experience?
I've found that large (1080p) MP4 files with x264 encoding seem to stream just fine, while even tiny files using other codecs are slow and buffer. Is there something better?
The network itself isn't an issue. High-speed, wired connections, etc.
What should I convert my collection to?
The other option is for me to go back to running the server on my Mac Mini and just accessing the Drobo on the network for storage. Might be a simpler or more desirable option? Just not sure how network storage access affects performance on the Mac server.
