I'm considering getting a DROBO or Synology. Either way, based on the NAS Compatibility Guide it sounds like I'd likely run into issues with anything in my price range.
Can Plex be run well if I don't run it on the NAS? In other words, if I have Plex running on a good PC, and all the media content is stored on the NAS?
I assume yes, but just want to make sure this can work. For me it's more that I want a lot of storage to store all my content but ALSO want a raid setup to protect again a drive failing. And a NAS makes sense (esp. Drobo) if I'm able to install hard drives of different sizes and have easy access to swap drives out when they go bad.
I keep my PC on all the time anyway, so I don't really see much advantage to installing Plex on the NAS itself, especially with all the negatives (due to most NAS's not having enough processing power for transcoding)
Any feedback or guidance about this?
If I do have Plex installed on a PC, and I buy a NAS... would I use drive mapping in Windows to mount the NAS or how does this work exactly?
Thanks
